We have come to discover our daughter, Lily, who is 11, has a knack for MacGyver-ing up her life. Take, for instance, today's spring break rainy day ho-hums. She and 3 friends decided they would plan out a fishing excursion - apparently a perfect rainy day activity. I took them to lunch and they were planning fools. They asked if we could go buy some fishing equipment, not so much. They begged to raid Dad's Canada-fishing stash, oh that's not gonna happen. So once home, with undeterred determination, they gathered several materials and head over to a small pond at a local park. They concoct their fishing pole, dug for worms and a-fishing they went. Now, before I get calls from PITA, no fish were harmed in this excursion. I explained that they had strict 'catch and release' orders. Well, Lily decided my hubby and I would never believe that they caught 5 fish with their MacGyver gear, so they brought all five stinky fish home in a wet bag. Once here, they quickly placed the fish into a large bucket of water and low and behold "Hope, Faith, Love, Joy & Miracle" were still breathing and swimming around. And yes, they named their catch as only young girls would. Anyway, after much deliberation and spectacle, Hope, Faith, Love, Joy & Miracle were released into a nice little creek near our house where I am sure they are enjoying their new-found freedom swimming to the Des Moines river and beyond. I told Lily maybe a career at the DNR was in her future or maybe she will continue in MacGyver's path and be a super smart, all-American secret agent - either way, her creativity and determination astounds.
